2027 Hyundai Kona

2027 Hyundai Kona

The 2027 Hyundai Kona N Line Ultimate puts 190 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque behind a 1.6 L turbocharged four-cylinder, the strongest output in a five-trim Canadian lineup that otherwise runs on a 2.0 L engine making 147 hp. That range of choices defines the Kona in the compact SUV segment: a small footprint at 4,350 mm long, a 723 L cargo area behind the rear seats, and all-wheel drive that is standard on three of the five trims.

Front-wheel drive stays with the Essential and Preferred, and both can also be had with AWD. Equipment grows from the Essential’s heated front seats and wireless smartphone projection to the N Line’s surround-view camera and highway driving assist. For drivers across British Columbia, the Kona’s tidy size suits tight parking, while its 205 mm of ground clearance on 2.0 L AWD trims suits wet back roads. Pricing for the lineup will be announced at a later date.

The Kona’s look shifts with each trim. The Essential rides on 17-inch aluminum wheels with P215/60R17 all-season tires. From the Preferred up, 18-inch wheels with P215/55R18 tires take over, joined by roof rails, rear privacy glass, aero wiper blades and mirror-mounted turn signals. The Preferred Trend and Luxury add premium dark grey body cladding and chrome window belt moulding, giving the body a rugged outline without leaving the compact footprint.

The N Line Ultimate goes its own way. It has an exclusive front bumper fascia and grille, a rear bumper with a diffuser, N Line emblems on the grille and fender, and body-coloured cladding. Its 19-inch aluminum wheels wear P235/45R19 tires, and a two-tone body colour is available on this trim alone. All five trims share LED headlights and taillights, while the Luxury and N Line step up to full-line LED daytime running lights and LED turn signals set inside the headlights and taillights. A wide power tilt-and-slide sunroof is standard from the Preferred Trend up. The N Line stands 4,385 mm long and 1,615 mm tall, slightly longer and taller than the Preferred Trend and Luxury at 4,350 mm and 1,610 mm.

Inside, material choices separate the trims. The Essential and Preferred have cloth seats, the Preferred Trend and Luxury use leatherette, and the N Line is trimmed in leather and suede with red accents and stitching. Metal sport pedals, door scuff plates and paddle shifters on a shift-by-wire selector add to the N Line’s sport feel. The Preferred brings a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Dual-zone automatic climate control arrives with the Preferred Trend, and ambient lighting in 64 colours with an 8-way power driver’s seat arrives with the Luxury.

The cabin seats five, with a 60/40 split rear bench and an adjustable head restraint. Rear leg room measures 970 mm and front leg room 1,059 mm. Cargo space reaches 723 L with the rear seats up and 1,803 L with them folded, and a dual-level cargo floor is standard on every trim. Heated front seats, two USB-C outlets in front and two in the rear are standard on all five. Ventilated front seats are exclusive to the N Line.

Powertrain

Four trims run a naturally aspirated 2.0 L four-cylinder rated at 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with an Intelligent Variable Transmission and regular unleaded fuel. Fuel use depends on the drivetrain. The Essential lists 7.5 L/100 km combined with FWD and 8.5 L/100 km with AWD, while the Preferred lists 7.6 L/100 km combined with FWD and 8.6 L/100 km with AWD. The Preferred Trend and Luxury, both AWD, list 8.6 L/100 km combined. Their 47 L tank and 205 mm of AWD ground clearance suit mountain grades and wet pavement.

The N Line Ultimate is the only Kona with the 1.6 L turbocharged four-cylinder, making 190 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It sends power through an eight-speed transmission to all four wheels and lists 9.1 L/100 km combined, with 9.9 L/100 km in the city and 8.1 L/100 km on the highway. Its fuel tank holds 50 L and its ground clearance is 210 mm.

Technology & Safety

Entertainment: Every Kona has a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth hands-free calling and the BlueLink connected vehicle system. The N Line Ultimate adds on-board navigation to that same screen size. Wireless device charging joins the Preferred Trend, Luxury and N Line, and those three also gain Hyundai Digital Key and a proximity-activated smart liftgate. Audio steps up from a six-speaker system on the Essential, Preferred and Preferred Trend to a Bose premium system with 8 speakers on the Luxury and N Line. Those two grades also swap the 4.2-inch colour cluster display for a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster, which keeps speed and trip data right in the driver’s sightline on long highway stretches.

Safety: The standard driver-assistance suite on all five trims covers Lane Following Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Warning, Driver Attention Warning and Rear Occupant Alert. The Essential carries Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection. From the Preferred up, that system adds junction-turning detection, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability comes with it. Stability control, ABS, a tire pressure monitoring system and front and rear side air curtains are standard throughout. The N Line Ultimate carries the longest list, adding Highway Driving Assist, Surround View Monitor, Blind View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, forward, side and reverse parking distance warning, and reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist. Those cameras and sensors make tight urban parking easier.
